Film: Torment
Type: Classic Style 1920’s
Characters:Jade Morrison && Sinan Osman
(A character had to enter a room and cross the room to have a dialogue with the second character. There had to be a 180 degree rule during this short video clip and it had to be around 2 minutes. )
The lady is classy looks scared about the situation she is in. She is a victim of torment and that’s why we named our story 'Torment'.
The lady gets a phone call and she gets out her house and gets into car. Before getting out of the car she is going to get a gun out of a drawer. All the equipment we are going to use is going to fit in to the time. This is important because we want it to fit the 1920's to make it look realistic.
The lady rushes to go to the spot. The scene is set in a spiral staircase. There is going to be shots of her going up the stairs and we are going to record her from her back making her look vulnerable.
We are going to have circular panoramic shots as she goes up the stairs.
We will have close ups to her clothing and her face to show her prettiness and her wealth and social status.
The male character is going to look like a character from the Italian mafia which is classic. He would have his back turned and would have a cigar in his hand. He would wear an Italian hat so it would be obvious that he is Italian andit would add to the image that he is Italian. The camera angles and shots would show his power. We would have close ups to his face when he smiling and we would have close ups to his cigar which would make him look evil.
We will have a shot reverse shot when the man is smiling and we would show his evil eyes and his facial expressions. This would fit in with the conventions because there is always an bad character and this would be shown to the audience in a clear way by their actions and by the use of camera movement.
We would have the 180 degree shot in this scene as well.
We haven’t found a dialogue yet but the man is going to be in control demanding her to sit down. The conversation is going to be heated and the woman would be in distress when the man comes close to her. A typical convention is damsel in distress. When the camera comes close to the lady the audience would be sorry for the girl because she looks innocent and she cant do anything about the situation. The man would have an envelope in his hand with pictures. She would snatch it off and take something out her purse.
The screen goes black and there is going to be a gun shot. When the screen is black we are going to hear footsteps of someone running out living it on a cliff hanger making the audience think of what’s going to happen.
Equipment Needed:
- white dress for the girl
- italian hat
- old equipment to set the scene e.g phone, chair and tables
- cigar for the male character
- envelope and some photos
- bag for the girl ( a small purse looking bag)
- pearls and makeup suitable to the 1920's
- spiral staircase
- suit and shoes for the male character
- a vintage old place/building

This is a shot were the character or object looks really small in the frame. It shows a small figure and it’s mostly done in from of big buildings and objects to make that figure look smaller and weaker.
Long Shot
In this shot the figure is shown as whole and its closer to the camera. It’s also done to show its relation with the surroundings.
Medium Long Shot
In this shot the character is seen in more detail and the whole body is also shown. This shot can be used to set the scene to show the audience were the character is.
Medium Shot
In this shot the whole body is not shown. It’s from the knees to the head. This shot is also called the mid-shot. It’s also similar to the Medium Long Shot but the only difference is that below the knee is not shown.
Medium Close Up
This shot is from the mid chest to the head. It shows more detail of the character and it’s mostly used when characters are talking and having a conversation.
Close Up
This shot only shows the head and the shoulders. This shot is very detailed and it’s used to show the characters emotions and feelings.
Extreme Close Up
This camera shot shows a small part of the face. For example it would be the eyes to show that a character is crying, to show extreme fear and emotions.
Birds Eye
This directly shows the scenery. Its sets the scene and shows everything from above.
High Angle
This is a similar shot to the birds eye view it shows the scene as well and its done to show things smaller.
Low Angle
This angle makes the character look stronger in control. It’s mostly done to show the characters power and that they are scary.

The Birds

The Birds
At the start of the film we can clearly see the directors name Alfred Hitchcock. The bird sounds and the video of the birds gets the audience ready for something unordinary change in the birds making them want to know what it is and hot it happens. it would show the audience of what to expect. The bird sounds gets louder and louder as the actors names starts to come to an end. The video at the beginning is all black crows which don’t have a good image to the audience. This is because the colour black is significant because it symbolises death and bad news and the crows are not known as good creatures. In the opening scene we can see that is set in a busy city. The female character walks through the busy roads and there are the bird noises overcoming the train and car noises. The female character looks up and there is a wide angle of a big group of birds flying around. This makes the birds seem important and it makes the audience want to know whats going on.We can see that she was shocked about this because she walks in to a pet shop and she has a conversation about it. The outside noises stop when she gets in but there are the noises of the birds inside the pet shop. This is a good really scene to have the film recorded at and I think Hitchock did this to create more tension. We know from the films name that its based on birds and in all pet shops there are birds. After the conversation between her and the assistant the assistant goes in and she pretends to be the assistant to a man. We can see that she is lying because she doesn’t know what she is saying and the man knows that she’s not the assistant as well. The camera pans along with them along the cages so the audience can see each of there steps. During there conversation a bird escapes and they have trouble of catching it. The camera once again pans along with the bird to show were its going and there is tilts when they are trying to catch the bird. During the starting ten minutes there is nothing unordinary apart from the birds outside. The audience is waiting to be scared and there is tension and suspense built when they are waiting for something terrifying to happen. Tention is always found in horror films it is like an convention as it is in most films. Waiting for something to happen is an ordianry thring in Thriller Films.

Hide and Seek
Hide and Seek
In this film the scene is set on an important day, Christmas. This is an important point because Christmas is an important day for Christians and it means a lot to them. This may have been set in this time to make people think about the dates and a reason for this time chosen. The scene starts with laughing and screaming sounds so that the audience knows that there is someone playing a game without showing who it is and what’s happening. This makes the audience want to know who it is and whats going on. Then the camera zooms in to the girl in the park with the mother spinning on a ride. The spinning might have been done to cause confusion, because the camera tilts up to the sky showing the girls view. The father then comes close to them and watches them and that could show his distance realtionnship to them. The next scene is at home in the little girl’s bedroom. The mother walks in to the dark room playing hide and seeks lsupporting the title. This is an important point because it’s shown in the title. This scene shows the mother and childs perfect relationship. The mother then kisses her daughter and in her dialogue it suggests that the mother has something to hide or she is speaking to her as if she would not see her again as if its for the last time and close the door behind her. The screen goes dark which could have been done to show the mothers mood. The girl calls her mother and the mother slightly opens the door. There is binary opposition here, the light is only in the girls face blanking out her whole body. This is significant because this was done only once in the film. This time showing the life the little girls going to be through. She refuses to reamin in the dark and asks her mother to open the door for her. The light behind the mum suggests that she cares for her daughter. During the conversation between the mother and child there is a peaceful tune playing softly at the background this was done to show her soft and gentle the mother is to the child and to create tension. The audience realises something wrong because the mother gets emotional when she talks to her little girl and this is seen also in the kitchen seen. The mother has black clothing in contrast to the white cupboards this could have been done to show that danger is looking ovver her or she has problems. The mother takes tablets with alcohol showing that she isn’t living a happy life. During the scene the photo on the table is on the screen. The photo includes the mother father and daughter but the light only shines on the mother and child showing there relationship and leaving the father out. In this stage we asj wether the husband and wife don’t get along. This was shown in the short scene together when the husband works and the wife watches and goes to have a bath. From this shot then we jump to the scene were the husband is sleeping in the bedroom without the wife. We can sense the tension between the two. There is a water droplet sound at the background creating tension, with the clock changing. The man sees a nightmare and wakes up, which also creates tension because this wasn’t expected in this shot. He wakes up and goes to check were his wife is. As he walks to the bathroom the water droplets gets louder and only his breathing is heard. This makes the audience know that theres something going wrong. The man breathes slowly as if he is expecting the wife to do something bad. After this the director chose to have a slow motion to show each part slowly. The husband walks in and there is candles in the bathroom. He opens the glass door and sees the wife dead in a blood puddle and tries to rescue her. During this scene the little girl is watching everything and this is seen from behind the shoulder. This was done to show her innocence and to make the audience feel sorry for her garding her loss. There is a piano sound in this shot gets louder and stronger to create suspense and to show the husbands and girls sorrow. The screen blacks out as the family breaks apart. Black has negative symbols on people. Black is known as death and this was found in the film. Death and seperating from people is a convention found in horrors and thriller films and it was found in 'Hide and Seek.'

What to expect from Thriller Films...
In most Thriller films there is always silence to create tension, after a pause of silence there would be a banging noise or something that would make the audience jump. This is normally done to create suspense and to lead people to the wrong path. In nearly all the Thriller films there are crimes with unpredictable endings. The audience is always guided to another way so at the end they would be shocked about the ending because they would expect something else.
There is more then one type of thriller here are some examples: spy thriller, medical thriller, horror thriller , crime thriller and action thriller…

Idea 1
Idea 1:
In the one minute clip we are going to create we chose to do Japanese horror. In this theme there would be a character in white and we chose to have a young girl on the stairs looking innocent and small. Her face is not going to be shown till the second character goes next to her. Our second character is going to be on the top of the stairs looking big with power on the phone. This would be done to show that she can help the little girl at the stairs. When she would see the litle girl she will go down the stairs slowly to help. There is going to be a 180 degrees shot with zooms and tilts between the two characters. The clip is going to end when the second character the girl going down to help the little girl. When she touches the little girls arm and realises that she is not a normal child we will end the scene. We would leave it on a cliff hanger so that the audience would want to know what happens next. In most horror films it is a convention to leave it in a confusing scene and some films are finished by this way. Also in most horror and thriller films there is a scene were there is a blackout were the audience wants to see what happens next. This would be shown later in the film. We are working on props and where the scene is going to be done. We want the staircase to be long and plain were our voices will echo. This is a summary of our idea and we are going to develop and show each step in our work. We are now working on the characters as well as the set and clothing.

Research
Before we started the coursework for Media Studies I researched about famous Thriller Films and evaluated theiropening scenes. In this I looked at camera angles and why the film makers use that method. I worked on a project with my friend and we researched on the film 'Orphan'. It is a good film to watch because of its use of media institutions. It conforms to the convetions of our genre because it has the following things in it :
- silince
- screams and yells
- building tension
- needing help
- being innocent and vunrable
Here is a banner we made for the film:

Opening Scenes Of Other Films

Paradise Lost
The start of in the film was different to the other two films because it had a bit where there was a woman lying in a white room crying tied on bed. It is similar with the other films as well because she is also in danger. She is screaming and there is zooms to her eye. This was done to show the reflection of the person or creature torturing her. It’s a really bloody scene and the torture is shown step by step to show what the woman is being through. This is done so that the audience would feel sorry for the woman. Then it jumps to a group of tourist in Brazil. This makes the audience want to know what happened next. Why the woman is in that situation and who that person is. The scene being shown in Brazil is clear because of the Brazilian song at the background. It’s a happy song and they are travailing in a coach around Brazil. The driver is not concentrating on his driving and he is really fast. There is a zoom in to the baby drinking milk in this scene showing her purity showing that she is not aware of anything. The characters are shown vunrable by the camera angles. When the characters are shown from an birds eye view or a high angle then they seem smaller and weaker. It is a frightening scene but there is comedy in it as well. The main character which is a man is scared and tells the driver to slow down and the girls are not interested in his opinion and they joke and laugh about it. When the coach whizzes pass a motorbike then the music changes from happy to a song that creates pressure and implies that there is going to be something wrong. Straight after this they have an accident and the coach slides to the edge of the mountain. It is stuck and the camera zooms around the wheel showing that they are in danger. There is a 180 and 360 angle in this scene showing everyone running around trying to get out the coach screaming and yelling. Loud noises , yells and needing help is found in all horror films it is a conevtion to horror films. When everyone escapes from the coach then the coach rolls of the mountain, this created tension to the audience because they were worrying about the character s in the coach and the innocent baby with the mother. The effect on the viewers by this shot is that they want her to save her baby and want to know that the innocent baby is safe. The shot of the coach was from a high angle and it was shown from the characters eyes as if it was them looking down to the coach. This could have been done for the audience to feel like they were a part of them as well.

Opening Scenes Of Other Films

Black Water
This film started with the name of the film written blurry with a scary song at the background. The writing was blury so that it fitted in with the water being blury. It also may have been done in this to make the audience want to know what its called Black Water and why it might of been done blury. From this straight away we can understand that it is a scary horror movie. This is because when something is blury its hidden and its hard to be read , so it would show that there is something different , blury about the film. In the corner of the screen there is little writing in white showing that it is a real story. This would make the audience think about how it happened in real life and it would make them imagen themselves in the same situation. There is a family in a jungle area and they are going back from the country. They get into there car and starts the journey. The zooming out and panning of the car can show that they are being followed and that there is going to be something happening to them. This fits in with the genre because in most horror films when the characters are in a cool safe enviroment and there is panning/following then something wrong is expected. When the names of the actors come on the screen there are pictures from the film. They have photos of there holiday and them having fun. A picture that made me think was the picture of them pretending to kill each other. This is something ordenary, a joke between friends and people but it makes it look extrodinary. There is something wrapped around man joking about death. This at the begining makes the audience think of deaths in the film and they would start to create there own ideas in there heads. They would also want to know what happens next so they will carry on watching the film , they would be drawn to it. The movie being a thriller created a path for the audience and made them think when they saw the picture. The girl wants to go to a crocodile area for the last time. They have a map showing that they don’t know the area much. This is expected in horror films as well. Once a character looks lost something bad always happens. There is always the unknown. The map can be symbolic it can show dependence and Vulnerability . It can show dependence and vaThe camera zooms to the map to show that they rely on that and that they will be lost without it. Everything is normal in this scene there is nothing wrong with the opening. It shows a happy families journey back home during the ten minutes. They go to a pub like most British people and talk about routines situations. When they go to the crocodile area then tension is created. In the scene there is a man holding food down to a crocodile and it shows the crocodile eating it within seconds. This is important because there is a zoom to the crocodiles mouth showing that it has power and that can happen to the visitors as well. The music was also creating tension to the audience but not to the characters. It creates anxiety and awarness that something bad is likely to happen. They were there having fun enjoying themselves. There were zooms and shots of people in the crocodile place of children and happy families. This is done to show that they are innocent and unaware of the things that is going to happen to them. It is done to make the audience feel sympathetic for them. This could have been done to once again show innocence and that they are not aware of what is waiting for them. It may indicate the sense of danger. It also can indicate the problems they can be exposed to.

Opening Scenes Of Other Films

An American Haunting
The opening scene of this movie was different to the other two films I watched. It started in a forest during the winter time. The film was set in the olden times and was based on a curse. The camera angles in the first scene showed a girl running home with something following her which was not scene. The camera zoomed in to the girl when she fell over to show her innocence. The camera moved around really quickly to create suspense and the camera was representing the girl’s eyes showing her confusion and her feelings. The young girl is out of breath when she gets home. The clock ticking can show the time for to escape is going down maybe getting closer to her death. During the opening seen we see that it was a dream. The girl wakes up screaming and hugs the mother. She wrapped her hands around her knees to show that she is scared and the camera shows this shot to show her feelings once again. The mother is an alcoholic she sits down and has a glass of alcohol in her hand. In this scene the camera had the mother in shot as well as the photo of the family. This can show that they had a problem because of her drinking, or that the mother is upset about the situation something that she cannot solve and finds the only way in drinking. The mother has a letter in her hand and the rest of the film carries on in a forest from the past. So they skip from the present back to the past. There is two lovers in a forest area and we can see them joking around. The camera in this scene then zooms in to a house slowly showing the whole family and the mise on scene. The props and clothing shows that it was a long time ago and that people still believed in witches and curses. The important thing in this scene was that it was Christmas time showing that they were religious. The scene starts with a zoom in the fireplace. The sound of the fire burning can show that it’s called and can be done to show relaxation. Then this is disturbed by a crying noise. When the mother and father walks up the stairs the noise carries on they whisper to each other to create tension they look around the house. There footsteps are herd and the creaking noise creates suspicion as well.
